How does Mounjaro work?
Mounjaro mimics two natural gut hormones, GLP-1 and GIP. Together they reduce appetite, keep you full for longer and improve how the body handles sugar. Patients eat less without the constant hunger that comes with dieting.
Who is it for?
It is usually used for adults, after a full medical assessment, who have:
- A BMI of 30 or more.
- A BMI of 27 or more with a weight-related condition, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or sleep apnoea.
What results can you expect?
In the international SURMOUNT-1 trial, participants lost on average 15% to 21% of their body weight over 72 weeks, depending on the dose. Results vary from person to person and are better with good nutrition, physical activity and regular follow-up.
Side effects and safety
The most common side effects affect the digestive system and usually ease over time:
- Nausea, sometimes vomiting.
- Diarrhoea or constipation.
- Bloating or heartburn.
Mounjaro is not used in pregnancy or breastfeeding, or in people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2. It can also make the contraceptive pill less effective, so an extra method is needed in the first weeks and after each dose increase. Treatment should be started and followed by a specialist.
How we use it at the clinic
We start with a full assessment and lab tests, then choose your dose and raise it step by step according to your response. We follow your side effects, body fat and muscle, and protein intake, so the weight you lose is fat while muscle is preserved, and we plan for what happens after you reach your goal.
Common questions
What is the difference between Mounjaro and Ozempic?
Ozempic acts on one hormone (GLP-1), while Mounjaro acts on two (GLP-1 and GIP). In trials, average weight loss was higher with Mounjaro, but the right choice depends on your health and how well you tolerate side effects.
Will the weight come back after stopping Mounjaro?
Some weight can return if the medicine is stopped suddenly without a plan. We agree the next stage with you, which may mean tapering the dose or continuing on a lower dose alongside steady habits.
Is Mounjaro available in Kuwait?
