What is the difference between Ozempic and Wegovy?
Both contain the same medicine. Ozempic is licensed mainly for type 2 diabetes at doses up to 2 mg, while Wegovy is licensed for obesity at doses up to 2.4 mg. The doctor chooses the product and dose that suit you.
How does it work?
Semaglutide mimics GLP-1, a hormone the body releases after eating. It reduces appetite and constant thoughts about food, and slows stomach emptying so you stay full for longer.
Who is it for?
- People with a BMI of 30 or more.
- People with a BMI of 27 or more and a weight-related condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
- People who need non-surgical treatment after lifestyle changes alone have not worked.
What results can you expect?
In the STEP 1 trial, people on 2.4 mg lost about 15% of their body weight on average over 68 weeks. Other studies have also shown heart and blood-vessel benefits in people with obesity and heart disease.
Side effects and safety
Common side effects are nausea, diarrhoea or constipation and reduced appetite, most noticeable when the dose goes up. It is not used in pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with a history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2, and it should be stopped at least two months before a planned pregnancy. We monitor for any gallbladder or pancreas symptoms.
Common questions
Is Ozempic safe for people without diabetes?
The same medicine is licensed for obesity as Wegovy and is used in people without diabetes after a medical assessment. It should always be prescribed and followed by a doctor.
When does the weight start to come off?
Many patients notice less appetite in the first weeks. Weight loss is gradual as the dose is increased over several months.
Which is better, Ozempic or Mounjaro?
No single medicine is best for everyone. The choice depends on your weight, other conditions, side effects and availability, and the doctor will discuss the best option with you.
